Last night I got home from work and Fight Club was on GlobalTV. I dont’t know how many times I’ve watched this movie, but everytime I do, it always amazes me. I always discover something new. It’s one of the superb movies that came out in 1999, along with The Matrix, Sixth Sense, and The Three Kings.
With all of the jokes, action, computer effects, monologues, distressed make-up, electronic music, IKEA bashing, consumerism bashing, capitalist bashing, corporate bashing, Average-9-to-5-Joe bashing, self-help bashing, support group bashing, two lines of monologue managed to stand out and made a lasting impression on me.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes.
Working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.
It’s those two lines that came to my mind when I saw the subject Advertising and Promotion being offered in Wollongong, and it got me thinking, “Ohmygod, there’s a field of study that teaches you how to sell to people shit they don’t need.“
I took that subject, and the rest boils down to where I am right now.
